DevFest Nantes 2024: Decoding the Darkness... and Making Way for the Light!

DevFest Nantes 2024

The 2024 DevFest Nantes took place on October 17 and 18 under a Halloween-inspired atmosphere. With the theme “The Dark Chapter,” this key event for developers in western France immersed participants in a stimulating and immersive environment. Damien and Thibault, our local experts, attended the event to explore the latest trends and gather insights applicable to their future projects.

AI and RAG: Untamed Creatures?

DevFest 2024 could not escape the topic of AI, now impossible to ignore. The rise of LLMs (Large Language Models) such as GPT sparked numerous discussions throughout the event. During his conference, “Does the GPT Meteor Signal the Extinction of Search Engine Dinosaurs?”, David Pilato reignited the debate surrounding the coexistence of AI and search engines. According to him, rather than replacing traditional search systems, LLMs are actually giving data retrieval a new momentum.

Meanwhile, Hugo Vassard from Ippon Technologies took attendees deep into the world of RAGs (Retrieval Augmented Generation) and the challenges involved in evaluating them. His insights on the importance of testing chatbot performance and identifying potential risks provided valuable perspectives for projects where user experience remains a central concern.

For our developers, these discussions opened up new perspectives on how AI and RAG architectures can be integrated into real-world applications while maintaining strong evaluation frameworks. A delicate balancing act, but a necessary one to deliver cutting-edge solutions to clients.

Breaking the Curse of Obsolescence

Tristan Nitot from OCTO Technology delivered another standout session with his talk, “I Have an Idea to Reduce Digital Environmental Impact by Four.” He addressed the massive environmental footprint of the digital industry and encouraged developers to return to software optimization practices in order to extend device lifespans instead of constantly replacing hardware.

This vision strongly resonates with our experts, for whom sustainability is becoming an increasingly important consideration in project design. Building more efficient and lightweight solutions also means meeting growing client expectations around responsible innovation. What if optimization became the next “magic formula” for creating greener digital projects?

Moving Toward a Brighter Future

Despite its dark and spooky theme, this 2024 edition delivered a wealth of fresh ideas and innovative perspectives. The lessons learned from conferences and peer discussions will undoubtedly enrich future methods and approaches, particularly around performance, sustainability, and innovation.

This “Dark Chapter” of DevFest ultimately closed on an optimistic note, proving that even in the heart of darkness, the light of innovation always finds a way through.
